The situation when we started

A crypto exchange operating in Nigeria came in with a straightforward problem: their organic search presence was essentially zero. Ten daily clicks from Google. A domain with no authority. No content strategy. Technical setup creating indexing problems. And a market growing more competitive by the month. every major crypto brand was investing in SEO simultaneously.

The challenge wasn’t just “do better SEO.” It was building an entire organic growth engine from scratch in a market where trust signals matter enormously, and where Google applies its strictest quality thresholds. YMYL (Your Money, Your Life). to anything touching financial transactions.

What the audit found

Three problems were compounding each other:

• Zero domain authority. No backlinks of substance. No external signals telling Google this was a legitimate, trustworthy site. In YMYL categories, this is particularly damaging. Google applies stricter quality thresholds to financial sites before it ranks them.

The approach

Work ran in three phases, each one unlocking the next.

Phase 1: Technical foundation. Fixed crawl budget issues. Resolved canonical problems. Improved Core Web Vitals scores to meet Google’s threshold for this category. Made every important page cleanly indexable. This sounds basic but it is where most sites bleed organic potential. Google cannot rank what it cannot properly crawl.

Phase 2: Content strategy around buyer intent. I mapped the full search journey for Nigerian crypto users. Not just “buy bitcoin” but the questions people ask at every stage: how exchanges work, how to compare fees, how to verify a platform is legitimate, how to withdraw, what happens when a transaction fails. Every cluster of search intent got a content plan. Pages were built to fully answer what the person searched for. not half-answer it.

This matters because Google tracks what users do after they click. A user who lands on a page, gets their question answered, and stays. that is a positive engagement signal. A user who clicks, doesn’t find what they need, and hits back. that is a negative one. Over 13 months of accumulated click data, those signals directly influence rankings.

Phase 3: Authority building. Targeted outreach focused on quality over quantity. Financial publications, technology outlets, Nigerian media properties. The goal was links that also drove referral trust signals. Not just link equity, but the kind of backlinks that tell Google a legitimate institution endorses this domain.

The results

Six months in: 2,500+ daily organic clicks, up from 10. Total clicks over the period: 195,000. Impressions: 5.18 million. The site went from invisible to consistently ranking for hundreds of keywords across the crypto user journey in Nigeria.

The growth was not a single spike. It compounded steadily month over month as the technical foundation improved, content pages indexed and ranked, and domain authority accumulated. That compounding is the signature of organic growth done properly. once the flywheel starts, it does not stop.

The key lesson

In a YMYL category, Google measures trust harder than anywhere else. Technical cleanliness, content that fully satisfies user intent, and authoritative backlinks are not optional. they are the minimum bar for competing. Miss any one and the other two underperform.

What made the difference was treating all three as a connected system rather than separate line items. Technical SEO enables content to be found. Content builds user satisfaction signals. Authority tells Google the domain is credible. Together and in the right sequence, they compound. Separately, they plateau.
